What is a Veterinarian?
A veterinarian, also known as a vet, is a medical doctor who has been trained to take care of the health of animals. Vets treat a variety of animals, from domestic pets and livestock to wild birds and zoo animals. They provide medical care, perform surgeries, diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries, provide vaccinations, and much more.
Is a Veterinarian a STEM Career?

Veterinary medicine requires studying and a strong understanding of science and technology, as well as a good knowledge of animal physiology and pathology.
Vets need to be familiar with a wide array of technologies related to animal health, such as:
- Diagnostic imaging such as ultrasound, X-rays, and CT scans;
- Blood tests to detect diseases, infections, and issues with the immune system;
- Surgery and medical treatments for animals with severe injuries or health conditions;
- Pharmacy to dispense medication and supplements;
- Preventative medicine to protect animals from diseases, parasites, and other health issues;
- Lab tests to detect viruses, bacteria, and other organisms;
- Tissue cultures to diagnose diseases; and
- Computer software to keep patient records, document treatments, and manage lab results.
Vets must have a thorough understanding of the sciences related to animals. They must also be able to use and apply the latest technology to diagnose, treat, and care for animals of all kinds. For these reasons, Veterinary medicine is considered a STEM career.
